In England, the Professional Footballers' Association<\/strong> partners with universities to offer professional players degree programmes designed to be completed alongside their season. Curtis Davies<\/strong> graduated from one of them in 2020, aged 35, while he was still wearing the shirt of Derby County F.C.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Four years later, when he announced his retirement after twenty-one professional seasons, the centre-back had already prepared his career transition alongside his playing career<\/strong>. A pundit on EFL Championship matches for several years, he joined Sky Sports<\/strong> in 2024, then registered as an agent with the FA (Football Association)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Who is Curtis Davies?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Curtis Eugene Davies<\/strong> is a former English professional footballer, born on 15 March 1985 in Leytonstone, in east London. A right-footed centre-back, he played for Luton Town, West Bromwich Albion F.C., Aston Villa F.C., Leicester City F.C., Birmingham City F.C., Hull City A.F.C., Derby County and Cheltenham Town F.C. between 2003 and 2024.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Standing 1.88 m tall, this athletic and vocal right-footed centre-back quickly established himself as a natural leader on the pitch, wearing the captain's armband at four of the major clubs of his career: Luton Town, West Bromwich Albion, Hull City and Derby County.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Capped three times by England at under-21 level between 2006 and 2007, he was subsequently called up to the senior squad on several occasions without ever getting on the pitch. In 2023, he ultimately chose to represent Sierra Leone, his father's country of origin.<\/p>\n

Since his retirement in August 2024, Curtis Davies<\/strong> has pursued two roles in football. He is a pundit for Sky Sports<\/strong> and an agent registered with the Football Association<\/strong>, attached to Unique Sports Group<\/a> as a player adviser.<\/p>\n

Having spent time at the Wimbledon F.C. academy between 2000 and 2001, Curtis Davies<\/strong> joined Luton Town in 2001 and turned professional there in 2003. He made 52 appearances for the club, scored the goal that secured the Football League One title, and collected a string of individual honours, being named the club's Young Player of the Year and then League One Player of the Year.<\/p>\n

In 2005, West Bromwich Albion paid around \u00a33 million to sign him. At the time, this was the record fee ever received by Luton Town for a transfer.<\/p>\n

The Premier League years, from Aston Villa to Hull City<\/strong><\/h3>\n

<\/p>\n

Loaned to Aston Villa in 2007, Curtis Davies<\/strong> signed for the club on a permanent basis on 3 July 2008. His spell there was marked by a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered in a match against Arsenal F.C. on 1 March 2008, which kept him out of action for several months.<\/p>\n

After a loan spell at Leicester City, he established himself at Birmingham City and then at Hull City, where he became captain. On 17 May 2014, he made it 2-0 within the first nine minutes of the FA Cup final against Arsenal, before Hull went on to lose 3-2 after extra time. Curtis Davies<\/strong> won the Championship play-offs with the club in 2016.<\/p>\n

Derby County and Cheltenham Town, the final seasons<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The six seasons Curtis Davies<\/strong> spent at Derby County coincided with one of the most unstable periods in the club's recent history. In 2021, the English Football League (EFL) deducted 21 points from the Derbyshire side, which was placed into administration in September before being relegated to League One.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Faced with this unprecedented administrative crisis<\/strong> under the management of Wayne Rooney, the role of Curtis Davies extended well beyond purely sporting matters.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

By accepting pay cuts in particular to safeguard the club's viability, and by stabilising a dressing room undermined by uncertainty, he turned this ordeal into a textbook case of leadership and crisis management.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

During this period, the defender became a reference point for the players who had come through the club's academy, notably Eiran Cashin and Max Bird. Curtis Davies joined Cheltenham Town<\/strong> in 2023, where he made 39 appearances and scored one goal. His departure was confirmed in June 2024, two months before he announced his retirement.<\/p>\n

Choosing Sierra Leone<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In October 2023, Curtis Davies<\/strong> received clearance to switch associations and won his first cap for Sierra Leone in a friendly against Somalia. On 5 June 2024, aged 39, he scored on his first competitive appearance, a 2-1 win over Djibouti in FIFA World Cup qualifying, and became the oldest player to score on his debut in the competition.<\/p>\n

His final appearance for the Sierra Leone national team came five days later, in a 2-2 draw against Burkina Faso.<\/p>\n

This late international conclusion<\/strong> brought a statistical anomaly to a close. Despite multiple call-ups to the England senior side during the Fabio Capello era, Curtis Davies had in fact never made an appearance, joining the very exclusive group of players called up by the Three Lions without ever earning an official cap.<\/p>\n

A career transition prepared while still playing<\/strong><\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The path of Curtis Davies<\/strong> stands out from the trajectories of most former players. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In 2020, while he was still under contract with Derby County and playing match after match in the Championship, he earned a bachelor's degree in Sports Writing and Broadcasting at Staffordshire University<\/strong>. The course, developed in partnership with the Professional Footballers' Association, is designed to be completed alongside a sporting career.<\/p>\n

He did not stop at earning the degree. During his final seasons at Derby and then at Cheltenham, he began appearing as a pundit on Championship matches<\/strong> broadcast on television, an activity he has continued since retiring as a professional player.<\/p>\n
